Opšti cilj Erasmus Mundus programa je promovisanje Evropskog visokog obrazovanja, poboljšanje i povećanje perspektivnosti studenata i promovisanje interkulturalnog razumijevanja kroz saradnju sa trećim zemljama, u skladu sa ciljevima spoljne politike EU a u cilju doprinošenja održivom razvoju visokog obrazovanja u trećim zemljama.
Posebni ciljevi programa su:
- promovisanje strukturne saradnje između ustanova visokog obrazovanja i povećanje kvaliteta u visokom obrazovanju sa dodatno izraženim Evropskim vrijednostima, privlačnim u Evropskoj uniji i izvan njenih granica,u cilju stvaranja centara izvrsnosti.
- doprinos uzajamnom obogaćivanju društava razvijanjem kvalifikacija žena/muškaraca, tako da oni posjeduju odgovarajuće vještine, posebno u pogledu tržišta rada, da su bez predrasuda i posjeduju međunarodno iskustvo kroz promovisanje mobilnosti za najtalentovanije studente i profesore iz trećih zemalja da stiču kvalifikacije i/ili iskustvo u Evropskoj uniji i za najtalentovanije evropske studente i profesore prema trećim zemljama.
- doprinos razvoju ljudskih resursa kapaciteta za međunarodnu saradnju ustanova visokog obrazovanja iz trećih zemalja kroz povećanje tokova mobilnosti između Evropske unije i trećih zemalja.
- poboljšanje pristupačnost i povećanje profila i vidljivosti Evropskog visokog obrazovanja širom svijeta kao i privlačnosti za državljane trećih zemalja i građane EU.
Erasmus Mundus program obuhvata tri akcije:
Akcija 1: Sprovođenje zajednikih programa na master (Akcija 1A) i doktorskom (Akcija1B) nivou i dodjela pojedinačnih stipendija za učešće u ovim programima;
Akcija 2: Erasmus Mundus partnerstva;
Akcija 3: Promocija Evropskog visokog obrazovanja.
